The Russian Enigma

Before Vladimir Putin launched his “special operation” in Ukraine as he calls it (it’s not a war, you see), he did an interview with American television which I saw. In it, he described the stranding of 25 million Russians in ex-Soviet foreign states as the biggest of tragedies. There are ethnic Russians in eastern Ukraine. They have been fighting to free themselves from Ukrainian control. The fact of the matter is, the boundaries of the Ukrainian nation were inherited from the boundaries of the Soviet Republic that preceded it. No consideration was given to other ethnicities living messily within its borders.

It reminds me of the situation of the ethnic Germans in pre-World War 2 Czechoslovakia. The Germans didn’t want to be under Czech control. They wanted to reunite with the Fatherland. Even more importantly, the Fuhrer, Adolf Hitler, hungered to save them. Czechoslovakia was an artificial construct, a result of World War I and the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Today, we have Czechia and Slovakia, two separate states that have stopped pretending they have anything in common. It is the larger European Union framework that men look to. Scotland is the same. It wants to be independent from London and away from those nasty Anglo-Saxons, but it wants to do so within the warm security blanket of the E.U.

The future of Eurasia, of the white peoples’ lands, is to be locally chauvanistic and internationally affiliated. If the ethnic Russians of “eastern Ukraine” were in Russia, and Russia was in the E.U., that would make them very, very happy.

Russia cares for western European opinion, and considers itself to be a European state. But it does not care so much that it is willing to have historical amnesia. Ukraine has always been associated with Russia. Kiev (NOT Kyiv, as the fucking American news commies like to say) was a historic capital of the Russian lands, a thousand years ago. The Ukrainians are like the little brothers of big brother Russia. To have them sidle off to the western Europeans and join NATO and the EU while Russia does not is intolerable.

There was a time when Russia expressed some willingness to move to the West. Even during the time of Peter the Great, there was a concentrated effort to face West and absorb Western ways. But Russia will not be fucked with. Ukraine is always going to be the little brother. A separation of Ukraine from Russia and its embrace in French and German arms is intolerable to the average Russian. Vladimir Putin speaks for all of Russia when he denies Paris and Berlin their power grab attempt at Ukraine.

The Americans too have been meddling in Ukraine, trying to get rid of pro-Russian leaders and install a more suitable leader. The U.S. always meddles. The problem is that Europe (minus Russia) is so rich and glittering that it lures the weak-minded Ukrainians from their traditional place.

What will probably happen is that Russia will lose. The only thing protecting it is its nukes. If it wasn’t for that, NATO troops would be flooding into Ukraine and fighting on behalf of their beleaguered ally. As it is, they only send weapons and money, lots of it. But despite its nuclear arsenal, Moscow cannot win. The tides of history are on the West’s side. Russia is a losing proposition. As long as it retains its Slavic culture and Orthodox religion, it will be a weaker partner in the international scheme. The fall of the Soviet Union shows that Russian plans have no real strength. THE WEST RULES THE WORLD, AND THIS INCLUDES RUSSIA AND UKRAINE.

  1. With all the territory he possesses, Putin could avoid continuing this pointless war, leaving the West alone and ending this hateful war. Peace is so desperately needed, and he continues to want to wage war…🤷‍♂️🙄🤦‍♂️

    1. It’s only pointless to you. To him, it matters a great deal. Russia has been fairly hurt as a result of its prosecution of the war. To Putin, it’s worth the cost. You should consider the viewpoints of others in your general estimations of the world.
